Their stunning debut, here's where it all started!! April 6, 2008 On the strength of the first two singles (Breakout and Twilight World) I picked up a copy of "It's Better To Travel". The disc starts off superbly with SOS's signature song, "Breakout", an uplifting anthem about self empowerment. The words convey a simple message: if you're in a draining, futureless, mundane place in life, find the strength to leave and start anew. Truth be told, the first few times I heard "Breakout" on the radio, I thought it was too syrupy sweet and "boppy" sounding. I'm not sure how or when, but the song grew on me and I began to really like it. Next up is "Twilight World", perhaps my favorite track. I was, and still am, mesmerized by the sheer coolness of this tune. That fabulous intro (announcements being made over a train station PA system) evokes a Pavlovian response in me. The horns come in and my heart starts to race. Then that FAT bassline drops! Mmmmm... My head is nodding and my toes are tapping... The strings fade in and I'm floating! Corinne starts off singing in a very low key and then proceeds, throughout the song, to do the most amazing things with her voice. "Twilight World" is beautifully arranged in magnificent layers of instruments and vocals. This tune sends me straight to cloud nine...
After the familiarity of those two radio releases, Better To Travel gains momentum. "After Hours", and "Communion" are luxuriant, moody pieces, teeming with despair. "Fooled By A Smile" is a dark warning about losing someone special because "the grass looked greener". I love the contrast between the sunny, upbeat music and the woeful subject matter. This had to be intentional, it works beautifully... "Its Not Enough" is another of my all time favs. Love the bassline and the hook is completely addictive! I remember my kids, very young at the time, walking around the house singing "Don't say you're sorry, don't even try!" Hilarious!
It's Better To Travel (Swing Out Sister's debut album) is nothing short of spectacular. This is one of those CDs that puts a big smile on your face because you're so glad you bought it! Every track is extremely well-crafted. I find the lyrics to be profusely emotional. SOS shows a strong affinity for heartrending torch songs. Corinne proves herself to be an extraordinary vocalist. Her voice is clear as a bell. Every word she sings is easily discernable. I find this to be a good measure of any singer's ability. Andy is brilliant on piano. Martin's drumming is superb, making those basslines absolutely enthralling. This CD is far greater than the sum of its parts. And thus, my love affair, my obsession, with this band took deep root.
If you're a fan of Basia, Lisa Stansfield, Sade, etc. "Its Better To Travel" is a must have...

~Will be a lifetime favorite on mine!~~ November 17, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was in the 8th grade in 1988 when I first heard the CD...I was in the car with my family and boyfriend on the way to San Francisco one cold December night to walk around during the Christmas Holiday when I first heard "Twighlight World" and the song stuck w/me for life. I went to the nearest mall and bought the tape...lol....then I lost it and 8 years later I bought the CD, now I am at it again and purchasing yet another CD from the ones lost in the past, at 31yrs old and married I STILL get tingles whenever I hear this CD, it brings back great memories and loves in my life. I love EVERY song on this CD and the lead has such a sultry and lush voice and she's in the ranks with Sade. I HAD to comment because this is a favorite CD of mine and will be for LIFE!
